Do-gooder of the year: Kiran Kaur, GirlDreamer

GirlDreamer, founded by Kiran Kaur and Amna Akhtar, is a non-profit organisation based in the UK that supports the personal and professional development of young women of colour to tackle social inequality and pursue their dreams.

They wanted to create a community and safe space for women like themselves, who were seeking support, guidance, and motivation to turn to.

Their community of young women of colour can access tailored support in both personal and professional development to tackle social inequality and pursue their dreams.

They started with absolutely no experience, no degrees, no qualifications, minimum finances and no business plan. It was purely passion-driven. They knew the feeling and their reason for being and so after much self-learning on the job, they continued to build their community.

Nearly 5 years later, they’re still going strong with a global community that is full of free and tailored access to opportunities, programmes and resources so that young women of colour can continue to live their best lives and create real social impact in the world.

They are incredibly passionate about the importance of a space like theirs where this feeling of connection leads to continued growth, motivation and fuel to do, be and achieve more.

“I love knowing that I can possibly have a small or big part to play in someone’s life journey and see my community thrive and live the quality of life they deserve. This gives me such a sense of purpose and hope and I love knowing that every day of my life feels this way.” – Kiran Kaur

“I absolutely love the conversations I have with the GirlDreamer’s I meet and seeing them thrive. I enjoy getting to learn more about who they are, what inspires them, what their dreams are and also what their needs are in order to fulfil their big dreams. This inspires me to go away and create unique ways of providing support & the right opportunities that elevate our community & propel them into their desired state of being and living.” – Amna
